Biography

Washington DC Team With 35 years of Capitol Hill experience as a Senior Staff member and government relations advocate, Mr. Lewan has substantial expertise in legislative affairs and close relationships in both the House and Senate. In addition to his policy work, Mr. Lewan has managed several successful political campaigns. He has assisted numerous Senate and House members in their reelection efforts and plays an important role in the work of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and the Democratic Leadership Council. He was a founder of the New Democratic Coalition, the Senate Mod Squad and the Third Way.

Mr. Lewan currently represents a wide cross section of Fortune 500 companies as well as some of the most important trade associations in the American business community, including New York Life Insurance, Toyota, The Phoenix Companies, The Principal Financial Group, Oracle Corporation, Idaho Power, Mutual of Omaha, Hospira, The American Gas Association, Medtronic, the National Association of Dental Plans, Blue Cross Blue Shield National Association, the Quality Diabetes Coordinating Council, and the National Association of Ordnance and Explosive Waste Contractors, among others.

In recent times he has also advised Microsoft, NASDAQ, Grant Thornton, Travelers Insurance, Hartford Insurance, the American Council of Life Insurers and the American Insurance Association.

In 1994 President Bill Clinton named Mr. Lewan Chairman of the United States Commission for the Preservation of America’s Heritage Abroad, which oversees cultural, religious and historic monuments and memorials of significance to Americans who trace their roots to Central and Eastern Europe. In this capacity, Mr. Lewan negotiated and signed bilateral agreements with Poland, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Bosnia, Romania, Ukraine, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, the Czech and Slovak Republics.

Mr. Lewan established Brown Rudnick’s Washington office. Prior to joining Brown Rudnick, Mr. Lewan was President of the Michael Lewan Company, which specialized in developing and executing public policy strategies for domestic and international corporations.

Representative Experience
• Chief of Staff to Senator Joseph I. Lieberman of Connecticut, 1989-1993

• Chief of Staff to Representative Stephen Solarz of New York, 1975-1988

• Served as a Senior Advisor to Democratic Vice-Presidential candidate, Senator Joseph Lieberman, in 2000 presidential campaign.

• Advisor to Senator Joseph Lieberman in 2004 presidential primary campaign.

Speaking Engagements
• Frequent political commentator on CNN, MSNBC, FOX NEWS, Radio America and other media outlets.

• Lecturer in political science and public policy at the Maxwell School of Public Policy, Syracuse University.

• Former host of a weekly radio program “Talking Politics,” which aired on the Radio America Network.

• Lecturer at the Library of Congress, the Brookings Institute, and before numerous university forums, corporate boards and trade associations.

Awards & Honors
• Commander’s Cross with the Star of the Order of Merit, by President Aleksander Kwasnievski of Poland (the highest honor Poland confers to a foreign citizen), in recognition of his successful work to improve Polish-American and Jewish-Christian relations.

• Named "Man of the Year" by the Emanuel Foundation for Hungarian Culture, 1999.
